Wan Chai’s artsy neighbourhood offers more than just weekend wandering—it’s also one of the city’s most sought-after residential districts

A trendy neighbourhood precinct, nestled between Wan Chai and Admiralty, Starstreet Precinct is home to a whopping three-storey Blue Bottle Coffee, the original Pici pasta bar and plenty of independent shops and galleries. Once known as a simple, quaint landmark—home to Hong Kong’s first electric power station in the late 1800s—this eclectic neighbourhood has since transformed into a hipster hotspot favoured by many.

We’ve rounded up all the things we love about the Starstreet Precinct, from the hidden gems and restaurants we love to visit to the new upscale developments that we’re eyeing for our next move.

Situated just a few minutes from Admiralty station, Starstreet Precinct is connected to Three Pacific Place’s indoor walkway, making it an easy stroll, whatever the weather.

The area’s three main thoroughfares—Sun Street, Moon Street and Star Street—are said to be named after a verse from the 13th century Chinese text, The Three-Character Classic, which reads, “the three luminaries are the sun, the moon and the stars”. Giving off a different vibe to its buzzing neighbouring districts, with quieter footpaths and a much more leisurely pace, the precinct is a perfect spot for a weekend afternoon stroll.

During the day, cafés and shops are bustling with lunchtime explorers, and at night, the area is transformed. City dwellers and hipsters alike flock to the precinct for a relaxing evening at one of the many restaurants and bars, from Pirata Group’s The Pizza Project to urban coffee oasis Elephant Grounds.

“There’s an electric energy about [Starstreet Precinct]: fun, food, culture and community, all in one,” says James Gannaban, restaurant group Pirata Group’s director of marketing and communication. “But at the same time, it feels intimate, relaxed and unpretentious. Hours and days spent here feel both like a mission and an escape.”

The neighbourhood has plenty of modern, upscale restaurants and cute, casual cafés to choose from—for lunch, dinner or quick coffee breaks throughout the day.

“It is a modern part of Wan Chai with a great vibe and a mix of cool establishments. You can meet professionals from various industries, artists, locals and expats alike,” says Bart Szyneic, founder and CEO of Italian restaurant Ask for Alonzo, which unveiled its fifth location in Starstreet Precinct earlier this year.

Avid shoppers and window-browsers can check out a multitude of boutique stores, home and design shops like the two-storey Kapok store, Monocle for curated lifestyle goods and gifts, and Hong Kong’s very own sustainable sneaker brand, Lane Eight. And casual explorers can stroll through leafy squares and secluded cul-de-sacs like Dominion Garden and Kwong Ming Street children’s playground.

For those looking for a “smart living” concept, Eight Star Street is a 24-storey complex in Starstreet Precinct housing a total of 37 units, and boasting high-tech features like smart security systems and video doorbells, digital mailboxes and app-based entry keys. Built in 2022, most of the apartments have already found owners, with only four remaining up for grabs.
