For the Tatler Ball at The Londoner Macao, two of our community members turn to Chopard to get ready

From numerous charity galas to the city’s biggest launch parties, Tatler community members Joyce Tam and Anne Wang Liu are no strangers to elegant and elaborate Hong Kong events—and looking good goes hand in hand with the invitation.

“I try to choose a colour for my outfit first and then match my make-up style to it,” says Wang Liu, who believes that the hours leading up to an evening of glitz and glamour are a big part of the fun. Tam agrees, outlining her routine, from skincare to wardrobe and finishing her look with make-up.

The two women have equally glamorous but unique styles. Tam opts for pieces that exude “comfort and elegance”, and names Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow as style icons. Wang Liu prefers “classic and structured silhouettes” with a pop of colour, citing Cate Blanchett’s sense of her personality and creativity as inspiration. “I believe a woman’s outfit should express her many layers: her femininity, her ambition, her creativity—and that every woman is extraordinary in her own way,” she says.

Philanthropist Wang Liu can often be seen in “drop earrings or a necklace set, depending upon the neckline of my gown”. She sees jewellery as adding depth to an ensemble, as with Chopard’s High Jewellery Collection bracelet in 18 karat ethical white gold and titanium, set with aquamarines, blue topaz and diamonds, boasting “deep rich shades [that] are timeless and can be worn for any occasion”.

Finance director and trustee of Design Trust, Tam says, “Jewellery is usually the finishing touch to complete any look and to shape a silhouette.” And as a lover of diamonds, she gravitates towards pieces like Chopard’s Red Carpet Collection earrings, in 18 karat Fairmined-certified yellow and white gold, the elegant pieces are each set with five pear-shaped fancy yellow diamonds, surrounded by more diamonds. Tam pairs these with a colourful and contrasting titanium brooch, another piece from the Red Carpet Collection. With rubies and pink sapphire, the intricate masterpiece takes the form of an open flower with dazzling pink petals.

“I try to frequent different designers for galas,” she says. But, because of its sentimental value, her favourite piece comes from a family jeweller: “My mom and I bought it together for my brother’s wedding, from a jeweller we’ve been visiting for many years,” she says.

Similarly, the reason Wang Liu holds certain necklaces dear isn’t because of their stones or the jewellery house that made them, but their engravings of her daughters’ names. “I wear them often to keep them close to heart, especially now that they are both studying abroad,” she says. Both agree: whether making a statement or as an accent to an outfit, every jewellery box is a treasure trove of cherished memories.
